Homily by Fr. Michael Laguardia

First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 117:1, 2
Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13
Gospel Reading: Luke 13:22-30

Heaven is for everyone.
Salvation is for all.
We are all made for heaven.
This is God’s will.

Heaven is to be wanted.
We have to work for heaven.
And we do it everyday.
Strive to enter thru the narrow gate.
We don’t wait for the last moment.
This is the moment.
It is difficult.
Entering into heaven
is not a stroll, it’s a struggle.
But we don’t lose heart.
Trials are preparations
for us to grow.
Embrace pain, carry the cross.
Endure trials as discipline.

Heaven is meant to be our hearts’ desire.
Don’t take it as a duty or obligation.
Want it, desire it.

Cross is the way to heaven, embrace it.

Genesis 28:10-19

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. When he reached a
certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking
one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with
its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and
descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the
Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give
you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your
descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out
to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples
on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you
and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to
this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised
you.”

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in
this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How
awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is
the gate of heaven.”

Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his
head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. He called
that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.

Big Message: Rest on God’s promise.

God loves making impossible promises.
God’s specialty is God’s impossibility.

Bethel is in the middle of nowhere.

Just because you are in the middle of nowhere,
it doesn’t mean God is not there.
God meets you in the middle.

Jacob used a stone as a memorial.

Everytime you declare Creed, it is a
memorial. It’s a marker.
To mark the moment.
It is a reminder of what God can do with your life.

Even your mess is your marker.
It reminds you that God is faithful in your life.

When you put your trust in Jesus,
that’s when miracles happens.

Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his
glory in Christ Jesus.

1. I believe in God.

God will provide.

If you think you deserve less,
you gonna receive less. Little problems will cost you a lot.

2. I believe in Jesus Christ

Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

When Jesus tells us to do something, He will be with us.

Every time you fall, Jesus will always be with you.

3. I believe in the Catholic Church

Our Church encourages the people to ask questions.
From questioning we learn,
from learning we progress.

4. I believe in the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is doing something in your life.
He’s moving little by little.
The Holy Spirit is moving in your life right now.
There is pain, it seems that God is not there.
But He is there, each and everyday.

It’s God’s presence that will get you out of your situation.
Whatever you are going through, surrender it to God.

Big Message: The creed defines how you live.

Jesus has a strategy to save mankind.
Jesus started with the end in mind.
Jesus will win the world through people.
Jesus started with a few people.

1 Corinthians 15:3-6

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time…

You’re called to disciple.

Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

You start with a few people.
In your family, in your company.
People you will journey with.
You have a story to share.
Tell them your Love Story.
Stories have a way of reaching people.
Stories are the best way to evangelize people.

Finding God’s triumph in all trials.

1. Real Evangelism

John 1:35-39

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying,
and they spent that day with him.
It was about four in the afternoon.

John 1:39

Come and see…

It’s really a relationship that He wants.

2. Relational evangelism

John 1: 40-42

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,
was one of the two who heard
what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
The first thing Andrew did
was to find his brother Simon
and tell him,
“We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
And he brought him to Jesus…

It’s too good not to share.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

3. Real Life Evangelism

Tell them your Love Story.
It’s about dying, and now I have life.

I am unable to take down notes here, because everything Bro Bo said maid sense to me. So, I just cropped the video. You may watch his talk here.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Our faith brings us together.
Our creed brings us together.
Our belief brings us together.
Jesus brings us together.
It turns foreigner to friends.
They change you, and you change them.

Big Message: The creed defines where you belong.

Our beliefs create brotherhood.
Creed create community.

Acts 2:42, 44-45

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

Join a Light Group
It’s all about working together,
walking together towards Jesus.

Welcome to the family.

1. I believe in God
It is an act of humility
I have a God, and that is not me.

Too much ego in relationships.
People thinking that they are God, when they are not.
No humility, no unity.
Let go of your pride.

2. The Father Almighty
God is the Father, and if He is the Father, I am His child.
And all people are sons and daughters of the Father.
We are all brothers and sisters.
Be kind to people.
People are related with each other by the blood of Jesus.
Be kind not because people are kind, but because you are kind.

3. I believe in Jesus Christ
You also believe what Jesus stands for.
Jesus served everybody.
He loved them unconditionally.
You need to serve like Jesus.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

The one who created you is a great God.
That is why you are a great person.
Don’t use the metrics of the world.
God’s measurement is different.
God’s measurement is love.
We are created in His image and likeness.

CCC 962
“We believe in the communion of all the faithful
of Christ”

CCC 962
“We believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church; and we believe that in this communion, the merciful love of God and his saints is always [attentive] to our prayers”

We have a massive church
1. Church Militant
– army of God, followers of Jesus
– weapon is the love of God
2. Church Penitent
– purgatory

Revelation 21:27

Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or
deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

– purgatory starts here
–transformed little by little into the image
of God

1 Corinthians 3:11-15

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

3. Church Triumphant
– saints in heaven, they were also broken
but they trust Jesus
– we ask for prayers to the saints

Revelation 5:8

And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.

Creed is a statement of trust.
Trust in God.

Creed: Conviction – Talk 1

My God is good.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

Your beliefs define who you are.

Big Message: The creed defines who you are.

The truths of the creed are found in scriptures.
But the creed itself word for word is not in the bible.

Creed is confession.

Romans 10:9-10

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart
that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your
heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you
profess your faith and are saved.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Principle 1: God works through patience

Our faith was developed over years.

God is never in a hurry.

Your’e a work in progress.
It will come in God’s perfect time.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

Principle 2: God works through problems.

Creed was developed because of problems.

There would have been no creed when there were no heresies.

In your life, there are problems.
From your chaos, God will bring out the very best.

We need to surrender to the Lord

Creed was not dictated by Jesus.

Creeds came through debate, discussion for centuries.

God use ordinary people, with their own biases and prejudices
to be able to create the Apostles Creed.

Principle 3: God loves working with you.

God wants to work with you. It’s gonna be messier, and longer.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Principle 4: God works through professions (confessions)

Are your words rich or are your words cheap?
You have the power to create or break through your words.

When I say, I believe in God the Father almighty,
it means that my Father almighty is bigger than all my troubles.
He is my provider.

Believe that you are God’s beloved.
