Speaker: Bro JC Libiran

Jonah 1:1-3
“The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:
“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa,
where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.”

You cannot stop God from loving you

1 Running Jonah

Jonah 1:3
“But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa,
where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare,
he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.”

All of us have missions
You cannot run away from your mission
Because your mission will run after you
God has a sacred mission for you.

when you are disturbed, God will give you peace
when you are too peaceful God will disturb you (comfort world)
Holy disturbance

God will finish what he starts in you

2 Reflecting Jonah

Jonah 2:1-3
“From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said:

“In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.”

What is the Lord telling me in the story?
Hitting rock bottom
Swallowed by your trial
Obey the Lord from the start
Save yourself from a lot of rock bottom

Why Jonah does not want to go to ninive?

Jonah 4:1-3
“But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.
He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home?
That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish.
I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love,
a God who relents from sending calamity.
Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

Because the ninivites are enemies of israelites

God is merciful to all even for the people outside of His covenant.

Who is your ninivite?
Sinu ang ibang tao sa yo?
Embrace the people who are different from you

Exodus 13:17-18
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country,
though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”
So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.”

Are you taking the longer route?
The shortest way may not be the best way
Trust in God’s wayze
Keep moving forward

2 Problems When you go from bondage to freedom

1. Detour
God is allowing it for you to be ready
God uses detours as doorways to your destiny
Just like a slingshot, you pull it back moving farther from your target
The greater pullback, the greater comeback.
Better things are coming

2. Despair
Exodus 14:11-12
They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?
What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?”

When people are gripped by despair
They’ll chose the predictability of slavery than uncertainty of freedom
Solution –> keep on moving forward
Miracles will happen if you keep moving forward

Genesis 6:11-22
“Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.
God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them.
I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypres wood;
make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.
I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens,
every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—
you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female,
to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal
and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”
Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”

Matthew 14:28-30
““Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Matthew 14:31
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Will we surrender our sin to him?

God is calling you to be a Noah
Build a little ark
God is speaking through the story

3 Difficult Questions
1. Did Noah’s ark really happened?
2. Did God really kill all those people?
3. Does this ancient story have a message for me today?

Genesis 1 to 11 are not purely historical, but imaginative story telling to convey faith reflections.
Authenticity doesn’t depend on historicity.

There are parts in the bible that is history
there are parts in the bible that is imaginative but God has a message through those texts
Genesis is not a history book.

The bible is a spiritual journal
The bible as a faith journey
Page after page after page, the bible records a maturing understanding of God.
In the new testament, Jesus revealed who God really is.
God is a loving and merciful Father. Fathers don’t kill children.
Read the bible using Jesus as your lens.
You become the God you worship.

John 9:3
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus,
“but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

3. Does this ancient story have a message for me today?

If there is no sickness, there is no healing
If there is no problem, there is no solution
If there is no bad, we can’t experience the goodness

When you are suffering, don’t think of God as a punisher,
but a preparer of your victory.

Through your storms God is creating a new you.

God allows floods to free you,
storms to save you,
pain to purify you,
and calamities to cleanse you.

Allow God to destroy what is destroying in your life so that GOD CAN CREATE A NEW YOU.

Work Passionately
and Wait Patiently

Babel is about division
Pentecost is unity

Babel tower of pride
Pentecost tower of humility

Gen 11:1-9
“Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.”
They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,
so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.
The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this,
then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,
and they stopped building the city.
That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.
From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”

–> They were building it out of pride

Acts 2:1-12
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment,
because each one heard their own language being spoken.
Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;
visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism);
Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

–> They were united in one spirit

–> Unity is built out of humility not uniformity

From the bible are stories of man’s response to Gods love

Babel people vs Pentecost people

Lance Raymundo shared his own experience of Babel to Pentecost
As a rising star in the film industry, Lance Raymundo was building a name for himself.
But an accident happened that led to his Pentecost miracle experience.

Here is a rough summary on what happened to him.

He was working out in a gym in preparation for his role on a play as Jesus Christ.
When suddenly, a barbel fell and hit his face.  His one eye was badly hit.
Believing that he will soon die, he gave his complete forgiveness to the
gym instructor who accidentally dislodged the barbel that caused it to
slip and drop to the face of Lance.
They rushed him to the hospital, and the doctor said that he will live only for 2 days.
But a miracle happened. When after 2 days, he fell asleep, he met someone from his “dream”
and told him that he will live and will be up on his feet after 6 or 7 days (I’m not sure
about the exact number of days).  The face of the man that he met in his “dream” was the same face that he has today.  He has a different face before the accident.  When he woke up, he wanted proof that he would
live.  He heard the voice telling him that if he can sit by himself, that is enough proof
that he will live. He tried with all his strength (feeling all the pain), to sit.
When he finally sat, he saw in his bed the crumpled bed sheet formed the face of Jesus Christ
and the Saint that he was also asking intercessions to.  His healing was quick, and soon
enough he was back on his feet again.

His accident made him closer to Jesus, experiencing complete forgiveness and healing.
