ASCEND: How to Encounter God – Towers and Thistles – Talk 3

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

The greater the battle,
the greater the blessing.

2 Corinthians 4:17
For this slight momentary affliction
is preparing us for an eternal weight
of glory beyond all measure

Let your struggle know that God is greater

Genesis 11:2-4

And as they migrated from the east,
they came upon a plain in the land
of Shinar and settled there.
And they said to one another,
“Come, let us make bricks, and burn
them thoroughly.” And they had brick
for stone, and bitumen for mortar.
Then they said, “Come, let us build
ourselves a city, and a tower with
its top in the heavens, and let us
make a name for ourselves;
otherwise we shall be scattered
abroad upon the face of the
whole earth.”

Babel is built because man
wants to become their own god.

God already made us like Him.
Yet we are not satisfied.
We look for what we already have.
We are blind.
We are blind to what God
has already given us.

Happiness is not about accumulation
it’s about appreciation.

Everything you need
is already in you.

The Lord is my Sheperd,
I shall not want.

You are already blessed.
The help that you need
is already there.

You need to close your physical eyes
so you can start seeing
in the eyes of faith.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

One Big Message: God will show up.

When you try to search for
your own happiness,
you won’t find it.
But if you try to help others
find their happiness,
you will too.

When people serve others
and forget themselves,
God shows up.
Miracles will happen.

The tower of babel
is a mountain of pride,
of selfishness.
It is anti Garden of Eden.

God designed blessing
to flow outward.

God designed you
to flow outward.

God wants me to be
an Eden stream.

Are you an eden stream?
Or a you a swamp?

When God blesses someone,
it is so that someone
could bless another someone.

Trust that God will provide.

Give without expecting
anything in return.

Blessing is designed
to flow outward.

Speaker: Bro Didoy Lubaton

From the garbage,
God finds gold.

Abraham have failures
but God did not give up on him.

We may be in garbage,
but God sees gold
in the midst of the garbage.

Genesis 11:4
Then they said, “Come,
let us build ourselves a city,
and a tower with its top
in the heavens, and let us
make a name for ourselves;

Genesis 12:1-3
Now the Lord said to Abram,
“Go from your country and
your kindred and your father’s
house to the land that I will
show you. I will make of you
a great nation, and I will
bless you, and make your name
great, so that you will be
a blessing. I will bless those
who bless you, and the one who
curses you I will curse;
and in you all the families
of the earth shall be blessed.”

From a no name person,
to a name great

God is creating
a new eden in you again.

  1. Do you believe that God will show up?

God will provide

Moriah – mountain of seeing
God will show up

God is doing something

  1. Can God work with you?

God was not asking for Isaac’s life.
God was asking for Abraham’s trust.

Are you going to be
the creator of your life
or are you going to be
God’s co-creator of your life?

  1. Will you hold on or will you let go?

Lord let Your will be done.

Abraham saw a ram in the thistle.
God provided a sacrifice.

It was Jesus who made
that greatest sacrifice.

God will make a way in every pain,
in every mountain.

One Big Message: Submit to His mercy.

We have problems with authority.
Because of the wrong experiences
of authority.

God is the highest authority
in this universe.

If you don’t feel at home,
check if you are doing God’s will.

If you are not submitting
into his mercy and authority,
you will not feel at home.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Whatever paralyzes you,
bring it to Jesus.

Jesus is the great healer.

Jesus knows what you need.

Jesus is Yahweh.

Jesus is Lord over sin and sickness.

One Big Message: God is in your boat.

Have you ever experienced chaos in your life?

God knows your future.
He invites you to trust in Him.
In the midst of that storm, there is a God beside you.

Water was the primary image of chaos.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Reading -> Matthew 8:26-34

You can defeat evil by exposing it into the light.

On our own we cannot defeat evil.

Evil has been defeated. Jesus has won.

If evil is working, God is working too.

Enemy uses fear from seeing God.

The best way to trust God is to know Him.

Noise drowns out God’s voice.

Readings -> Matthew 8:14-22

One Big Message: Go all in.

You cannot go all in if your trust is not
deep enough.

Matthew 8:14-15

When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

You answer His call and you serve Him forever.

Don’t waste a blessing.

Don’t be content with receiving a blessing.

Every blessing is a call to serve the blesser.

Are you blessed? It’s a call to serve.

Your relationship with Jesus is a journey.

Now instead of wanting God to fulfill your dreams,
you want to fulfill His dreams.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Matthew 8:16-17

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

Matthew 8:18-19

When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

Jesus did not just want to give a miracle.
He wanted to give a message.

Matthew 8:20

Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Jesus talked about the burdens in following Him.

God is our only Home.

If God is with you, you are home.

Can you give up the treasures of this world
to follow Jesus.

Matthew 8:21-22

Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus says follow me now.

Don’t let people pull you away from God.

Following Jesus is not easy.

Let God be your only real attachment.

Happy 40th Anniversary Feasters!! 🙂

The greater the battle you are fighting,
the bigger the blessing that is coming.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

– 2 Corinthians 4:17 –

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

– Matthew 8:5-13 –

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

One Big Message: Lord, just say the word.

  1. Love your enemies
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

– Matthew 5:44 –

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

– Matthew 8:5-7 –

The Jews hated the Romans.

The Kingdom of Jesus is different.

Who is your enemy?
When was the last time you loved your enemy?

Life is too beautiful to be carrying
so much emotional baggage.

I don’t belong to the world.
I belong to Jesus.
I belong to the Kingdom that would
love enemies.

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

  1. Do not judge

We’re called to be doers of God’s word.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

– James 1:22 –

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

– Matthew 8:8 –

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

– Matthew 8:10 –

Jesus saw the goodness of the enemy.

You need to see the goodness of your enemy.

  1. Not everyone who calls me Lord Lord
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

– Matthew 7:21 –

I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

– Matthew 8:11-12 –

Don’t depend on yesterday’s anointing.

Are you chosing God today?

You can’t use yesterday’s faith to
fight your tomorrow’s battle.

Believe that God can do more today
than yesterday.

Faith is trusting in God.
Faith means a life of obedience.

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

– Matthew 8:8-9 –

This kind of obedience was also
done by Mama Mary.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

– Luke 1:26-38 –

Not everything that God speaks makes sense.

The centurion and Mama Mary believed and
obeyed even if for them it does not makes
any sense.

There is a blessing when you trust and obey
even if it does not make sense.

Someday, it will all make sense.

We walk by faith, and not by site.

Homily by Michael Laguardia

  • Fraternal correction is not easy.
  • I am accountable for my brother or my sister.
  • Fraternal correction is motivated by charity.
  • Not for a selfish, or pride motives.
  • To restore relationship
  • To heal and not to hurt
  • Loving means also disagreeing
  • Kung mahal mo, pagsasabihan mo, pangangaralan mo
  • Ang tunay na pagmamahal ay pagmamalasakit
  • To love is also to get hurt
  • To love is also to be ready to hurt, if that
is the way to bring him or her back home.
  • I am my brother/sister’s keeper
and my intention is to bring him/her home
and I will bring this to prayer
Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
– Matthew 8:1-4 –
Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

1st Big Message: God is still Good

Life is not fair.

But even if life is unfair, God is still good.

He allows us to struggle.

When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
– Matthew 8:1-2 –

God’s idea of good is very different than your idea of good.

Behind all that bad, is goodness. Trust in my goodness.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
– Romans 8:28 –

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

2nd Big Message: You belong to God.

We all need to belong.

To be connected with God and to be connected with people.

You are not alone.

God is with you. God is close to the brokenhearted.

And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
– Matthew 8:2 –

clean vs unclean

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Command the Israelites to put out of the camp everyone who is leprous, or has a discharge, and everyone who is unclean through contact with a corpse;
– Numbers 5:1-2 –

And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
– Isaiah 6:5-7 –

And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
– Matthew 8:3 –

Jesus can cleanse you even with one touch.

Touch is connection
– sickness of separation that the leper experienced.

Touch is an expression of love
– the leper received the love from Jesus

Let’s be Jesus to someone this week

Jesus wants to touch you today

Jesus loves you

You’re mine. You belong to me.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
– Romans 8:38-39 –

And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
– Matthew 8:3-4 –

Walk Past Your Past

Posted on Updated on

Homily by Fr. Michael Laguardia

We carry different crosses
Accept the trials that comes our way
The way to sanctification

Sirach 2:1

My child, when you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for testing

– steadfastness is for life – commitment

1 Corinthians 13:10

but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.

God is faithful

The cross that we carry is fit for us

We follow the crucified Christ
We follow the suffering Messiah
We would have to undergo our own suffering — our cross

Rather than complain, embrace the pain

Offer what you suffer from

Don’t waste your pain, offer it to the Lord

Unite your sufferings with the sufferings of Christ

Make your suffering as sacrifice – Suffering made holy

Willfully, unite your suffering with the suffering of our Lord

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

Expect rest from Jesus today.

Big Message: Walk Through

You cant remove your past memory, but you can replace it — by creating better memory

Luke 4:14-19,28-30

Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

4 ways to walk past your past

1. Receive the power of the Holy Spirit

Luke 4:14

Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country.

Don’t revisit bad pasts without the Holy Spirit

Stay away from STILL people
– still complaining,
– still making excuses

The power of the Holy Spirit is stronger from the power of your past

2. Affirm your identity

Secure who you are in God Go back to what God says about you

You are forgiven You are saved You are loved You are fearfully and wonderfully made

Everything comes from grace

Whatever disfunctions in your life. This ends in me.

3. Speak your future

Luke 4:22

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

Sometimes people will hold you to your past

They see you who you were before.

They didn’t see your potential

It does not matter how it starts, what matters is how it ends.

Let God work in your story

Declare God’s plan for you

Don’t measure your success to the standards of the people

4. Triumph Daily

Luke 4:28-30

When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

You’re not meant to stay in your past

Eccleciastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven

Don’t waddle in places where you are meant to walk thru

Walk towards Jesus

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

Start thanking God for every blessing that you have.

Thank God for every problem that you have.

Behind this problem, there is a blessing.

Your life is beautiful

Matthew 7:13-29

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

Big Message: Choose only Jesus.

1st Warning: Fake Gate

Matthew 7:13-14

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Jesus embrace

Will you accept His embrace until it changes you?

There is only 1 gate. And that gate is Jesus.

2nd Warning: False Teachers

Matthew 7:15

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

Matthew 7:16-20

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

fruits = actions

unrepentant lifestyle of sin = false teacher

Are you bearing the right fruits?

What is Jesus looking for?

John 13:35

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

Are you bearing the fruit of loving relationship?

Speaker: Bro Audee Villaraza

3rd Warning: Fake Disciples

Matthew 7:21-23

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Am I a false disciple?

Being intimate with Jesus is knowing Him, and knowing by Him.

Have you given everything to God?

4th Warning: False Foundation

Storm proves the strength of your life foundation.

Matthew 7:24-27

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Will you remain standing?

Jesus is our true foundation.

Luke 24:30-33

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together

God’s purpose is still alive in you.

We all need Jesus

Matthew 7:12

So in everything, do to others
what you would have them do to you,
for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Loving yourself is healthy

You cannot give what you don’t have

Guard your heart

We can rely on God’s grace
for us to love

Do to others whatever you
would like others do to you.

We avoid sin of commission
than sin of omission

Book of Matthew Chapter 7

Speaker: Bro Audie Villaraza

Change does not happen overnight, it happens over time

You are a work in progress

There is a time for everything

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives;
the one who seeks finds;
and to the one who knocks,
the door will be opened.

God provides
God is a good Father
and He knows what His child needs

James 4:3

When you ask, you do not receive,
because you ask with wrong motives,
that you may spend
what you get on your pleasures.

1 John 5:14-15

This is the confidence we have
in approaching God: that if we ask anything
according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us
—whatever we ask—we know
that we have what we asked of him.

Matthew 7:9-11

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread,
will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish,
will give him a snake?
If you, then, though you are evil,
know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven
give good gifts to those who ask him!

Speaker: Bro Bo Sanchez

Big Message: Live in God’s generosity

1. Picture the right portrait

How you pray is based on your image of God

Genesis 3:1

Now the serpent was more crafty
than any of the wild animals
the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman,
“Did God really say, ‘You must not eat
from any tree in the garden’?”

The devil was lying

Sin is a lack of trust in God’s generosity

Genesis 4:6

Then the Lord said to Cain,
“Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?

God in His wisdom was going to bless
Cain at the right time

Can you be patient? Can you persist?
Do you trust God?

Cain takes matters into his own hands

2. Persist in the Purpose

Matthew 7:7

“Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.

If you trust on God’s generosity, you persist

Persistence achieves clarity

Clarity of your purpose
Are you conflicted?
A lot of people don’t know what they want

Deuteronomy 11:26

See, I am setting before you today
a blessing and a curse

Speaker: Bro Audie Villaraza

3. Pray with the right practice
Prayer and action go together

– Active prayer
– Prayer and work
– Ask, act

Work with what you’ve got

He who is faithful in small things,
will be faithful in big things

Don’t just pray for miracles, you produce miracles

John 14:14

You may ask me for anything in my name,
and I will do it.

God’s will for you is you would love like Jesus
